Whew...what a year to be a Social Studies teacher! I'm loving all this election talk with my kiddos. I also love that yesterday and today, we've been discussing the voting process in depth and giving our students a VOICE!
We held not only a 3rd Grade Presidential Election, but a school-wide election, too. I think our grade level had the most formal process (from what we can see), and our kids thoroughly enjoyed that! I even had one student say, "I just don't know who to vote for!" with the most concerned look on his poor face! I had to reassure him that this process was simply a mock election, and he was not responsible for such a large burden at his young age. :)
We used "real ballots" and each student was able to pick between the two primary candidates - Barack Obama and Mitt Romney - after receiving the most information about each candidate's beliefs on popular topics.
Each student also got to place their vote while working in their own private election booth, too! Another teacher put together these booths for us and I think she found those adorable graphics on Teachers Pay Teachers!
The results were so much fun to reveal to the students because some students were really pulling for one candidate over the other. Our fabulous math teachers did a great job of tallying up the results with students and revealing the results by "state" (classroom)!
Over all, we had a really great time and I'm so thankful that my first full year of teaching was during an election year...how fun!!
P.S. - Romney took 3rd grade at our school, but school-wide our students voted for Obama!

This is fantastic! Way to get them involved and help them understand how this all works (and how important their vote is). What a great lesson to learn at such a young age. Just fabulous!
